THE
FLYING CLUB IN SOUTH AFRICA DISPLAYS A SOCIAL SIDE OF FLYING
The flying club in Pretoria provides another side to flying. Flying is not only about climbing into an airplane and making it take off,
but is also a brotherhood of pilots and friends who socialise on a regular basis at a flying club. The flying club of the Pretoria Flying School provides many
social events and fun times for our pilots.
Quarterly solo/wings parties are held where recently qualified
pilots receive their wings and are initiated into the flying
fraternity in spectacular fashion. These parties are always
a bash and we have become well-known for the best wings
parties South of the Equator.
On a more serious note, monthly Safety Evenings are presented
every last Wednesday of the month at the flying club house. Various topics are covered
and any pilot serious about safety, will not miss a single
one of them. Examples of topics covered are ‘personal
minima’s, ‘pitfalls when flying at night’, ‘pilot
attitude versus altitude’, ‘critical decision
making’ and the like. We often make use of specialists
in their field such as a doctor approved for flying medicals
to discuss various health issues. On these evenings our
cash-bar is always open and many incredible stories have
been heard around the counter. Whether from the serious
presentation or from the sociability afterwards, every
pilot comes away with a tip or ten to keep his/her flying
as safe as possible.
Being a flying training institution first and foremost, our
bar is not open during office hours. But come Friday
afternoon and Happy Hour, the doors are flung open wide
and serious recreation is the order of the day at the flying club. Our prices
are very competitive and our bar is well-stocked with
most popular drinks.
On Fridays, Frieda opens the flying club kitchen from 10 am and
makes the most divine boerewors rolls, hamburgers or
toasted sandwiches, whichever is her personal favorite
for the day. The visitors to the bar at Happy Hour
will be able to have a filling snack before indulging
in hanger talk around the flying club's bar counter.
