PRETORIA FLYING SCHOOL has been operating at Wonderboom Airport, situated to the north of Pretoria, for the past 17 years. We specialise in fixed-wing flight training and present the complete curriculum from ab-initio training for the Private Pilot’s Licence up to and including the preparation for the Airline Transport Pilot’s Licence.

We pride ourselves in presenting top-standard training albeit in a relaxed atmosphere where the career-oriented student and the person wanting to fly only for fun, feel equally at home and well taken care of.

PRETORIA FLYING SCHOOL operates all year round, Monday to Sunday and only close during the X-Mas holidays until the day after New Year. We accommodate students who fly part-time by having instructors available from sunrise until sunset. Obviously, Night Rating students are catered for until much later.

Our courses are presented on a one-on-one basis to ensure personal attention which also allows each student to set his/her own pace.This means that we do not have specific dates of admission and every student joins whenever it suits him or her. Only our Commercial Pilot’s Licence ground school runs according to specific dates and is presented annually from May to August, after hours, in order to accommodate part-time students as well. Our ground school is presented in two modules of four subjects each, with a month’s break in between, which allows students to study for the first four subjects presented and write the exams on them, before attempting the next four. This has proved to be a winning formula.

PRETORIA FLYING SCHOOL is ideally situated, a mere 14 km to the north of Pretoria City Centre and very easy to reach by following the N1 North to Polokwane. (Directions from O.R. Tambo International Airport will be displayed at the end of this page). Pretoria is the capital city of South Africa and is situated in the Gauteng Province which is known for it’s mild weather conditions all year round. Summer is our rainy season and we may find ourselves ground-bound for a few days at a time. However, this is always a perfect opportunity to further prepare and study for the theoretical exams and should not hamper progress significantly.

Windy conditions only feature for a few weeks during late winter (July/August) which leaves us with perfect sunny flying weather for the rest of the year.

Wonderboom Airport has over the years become a very popular training airport, for a number of reasons ;

The building that houses our flying school is the original building where Pretoria Flying Club originated over 70 years ago when it was one of the first flying clubs to be established in South Africa. This lovely old building used to be the movie-hall for soldiers during the Second World War and still exudes an old-world, romantic atmosphere.

We are proud to say that we have the most spectacular setting at Wonderboom Airport as we are situated adjacent to runway 11 and all aircraft movement is visible from our lush garden-setting. A sparkling blue pool and jungle gym for the kids create a fun, family atmosphere and Mom and the kids have a great time whilst waiting for Dad to complete his flying lesson for the day. (These days of course, the other way around also presents itself quite frequently!)

OUR INSTRUCTORS

We have always selected our flight instructors with great care. At PRETORIA FLYING SCHOOL we believe that every good pilot is not necessarily a good teacher. We therefore only employ flight instructors who are exceptional teachers. A prospective pilot’s first flight instructor is very often the one person who determines the student’s successful entry into the Aviation Industry, or not. The responsibility of training pilots goes much further than merely the sharing of knowledge. Strong bonds of friendship and camaraderie between students and instructors are often formed and maintained for life.
